The Durham Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the FY 2025–26 Recommended Budget during its regular session on May 27 at 6 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers (200 E. Main Street). Residents are invited to speak or submit written comments regarding the proposed spending plan.
💰 Key Budget Highlights
- 3.5¢ property tax rate increase proposed (2.5¢ for general services; 1.0¢ for capital needs)
- $10.4 million increase for Durham Public Schools (DPS); total DPS local support reaches $285.5M
- $1.44 million in Pre-K funding from ARPA to sustain Durham PreK programs
- Personnel investments:
- 3%–4% merit raises
- 30.5 new full-time positions, including 12 in EMS and 5 deputies in RTP
- Public Safety & Health:
- $1.2M in EMS enhancements, including five new ambulances
- $1.5M to support expanded mental health services in schools and through nonprofits
- $573K to expand operations at the County’s Youth Home
- Infrastructure & Sustainability:
- Sewer and stormwater fee increases
- $10.2M increase in capital fund to support long-term projects and debt service
- New vehicles and equipment across departments totaling $7.2M
