Durham County Plans Budget Hearing on Tuesday

The Durham Board of County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the FY 2025–26 Recommended Budget during its regular session on May 27 at 6 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Chambers (200 E. Main Street). Residents are invited to speak or submit written comments regarding the proposed spending plan.

💰 Key Budget Highlights

  • 3.5¢ property tax rate increase proposed (2.5¢ for general services; 1.0¢ for capital needs)
  • $10.4 million increase for Durham Public Schools (DPS); total DPS local support reaches $285.5M
  • $1.44 million in Pre-K funding from ARPA to sustain Durham PreK programs
  • Personnel investments:
    • 3%–4% merit raises
    • 30.5 new full-time positions, including 12 in EMS and 5 deputies in RTP
  • Public Safety & Health:
    • $1.2M in EMS enhancements, including five new ambulances
    • $1.5M to support expanded mental health services in schools and through nonprofits
    • $573K to expand operations at the County’s Youth Home
  • Infrastructure & Sustainability:
    • Sewer and stormwater fee increases
    • $10.2M increase in capital fund to support long-term projects and debt service
    • New vehicles and equipment across departments totaling $7.2M
