Durham School of the Arts students walked out of class Friday to protest against bullying, which friends and family say led a 13-year-old girl named Gabriela “Gaby” Ortega to take her own life.
“Today’s peaceful gathering represented our students’ desire that DSA continue to provide safe spaces and prioritize protection,” said Jackie Tobias, principal at the Durham Public Schools arts school. “We want to hear our students’ voices. We want them and their parents and families to know that we will continue to prioritize and care about their well-being and safety. Counselors, teachers, and administrators are safe adults who are ready every day to have confidential conversations with any student who needs a listening ear in a safe space.”
