Durham residents planning around the long weekend should take note of several service changes for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 1, as most City of Durham offices and facilities will be closed in observance of the holiday.
🗂️ City Offices & Services
City Hall and all non-emergency City operations will be closed. Essential services like emergency response will continue, but general administrative offices will resume operations on Tuesday, September 2.
🚛 Trash, Recycling & Yard Waste
No curbside collection will occur on Labor Day. All collections for the week will shift one day later than normal.
In addition, the following facilities will be closed Monday:
- Waste Disposal and Recycling Center
- Yard Waste Facility
- Household Hazardous Waste Center
Residents can sign up for service alerts via the Durham Rollout app.
🏞️ Parks & Recreation
Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) offices and indoor facilities will also be closed. However, Hillside Pool will be open from 1–5 p.m., and spraygrounds will follow their regular operating schedules, weather permitting.
Athletic fields and picnic shelters remain available for rental. City lakes remain closed due to damage from Tropical Depression Chantal.
For updates on DPR programs, call 919-560-4355 or visit the DPR website.
🅿️ Downtown Parking
The Park Durham Customer Service Center will be closed.
Free parking will be available in on-street spaces and most City-owned garages and surface lots on the holiday. Be aware of special event rates ($7/vehicle) in select garages 90 minutes before scheduled events. Check the Special Event Parking Calendar for details.
