South Durham High Schools Celebrate Millions in Scholarship Wins

Students from South Durham high schools are celebrating impressive scholarship awards as part of Durham Public Schools’ Class of 2025, contributing significantly to the district’s record-setting $72.2 million in total scholarships earned this year.

Leading the pack district-wide is Southern School of Energy and Sustainability, where graduates earned a remarkable $23,022,334 – more than any other high school in the district. Southern’s total alone represents nearly one-third of the entire DPS scholarship amount, a reflection of the school’s growing emphasis on college readiness and career pathway programs.

Southern scholarship winners include:

  • Alexa Izquierdo, Chancellor’s Science Scholarship, UNC-Chapel Hill
  • Zoe Johnson, Merit Scholarship, Randolph College
  • Kevin Perla Martinez, Wingate Academic Scholarships, Wingate University
  • Errik Reid, Academic Merit Scholarship, Wingate University

Jordan High School also posted strong results, with students earning $11,524,116 in scholarships. Known for its broad academic offerings and diverse extracurricular programs, Jordan continues to be a consistent contributor to the district’s academic success stories.

  • Camille Jones, Academic Merit Award, Meredith College

Hillside High School, a pillar of South Durham’s educational history and a hub for arts and IB programs, earned $8,340,044.83 in scholarships. The school’s performance underscores its continued commitment to both academic excellence and student support initiatives.

Hillside scholarship winners include:

  • Karma Livingston, Cheatham-White Scholarship and The Gates Scholarship, North Carolina A&T University
  • Breanna-Le Wilson, Cynthia D. Brown Scholarship, North Carolina State University

Superintendent Dr. Anthony Lewis praised students across the district for their dedication: “These monetary rewards are a true testament to their hard work and demonstrate the initiative and desire to succeed that our students bring with them to Durham Public Schools.”
