Durham’s 911 Center Invites Public Input as It Seeks National Re-Accreditation

As the Durham Emergency Communications Center begins its fifth re-accreditation process through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), residents are invited to play a part in shaping the future of local emergency services.

Through June 21, community members can share their thoughts about the center’s performance and its compliance with CALEA’s rigorous public safety communications standards. A public comment portal is now available on the Durham Emergency Communications Center’s website, and written comments may also be mailed directly to CALEA.

Durham’s 911 Center has been CALEA-accredited since 2009, a status that reflects adherence to 208 industry standards across policy, operations, management, and support services. Re-accreditation occurs every four years and is a voluntary but highly regarded process.

“The accreditation is a testament to the hard work, training, dedication, and professionalism of the men and women who work in our Center supporting all of our public safety agencies in Durham,” said Director Randy Beeman. “It is a fantastic achievement to have highly skilled and trained staff receive this distinguished honor, and our goal is to keep our accredited status which shows our commitment to the excellent delivery of public safety call-taking and dispatch services.”

Residents’ feedback will contribute to an independent assessment conducted by a CALEA compliance service member, who will evaluate whether Durham continues to meet the highest national standards for emergency communication services.
