Juneteenth in Durham: What City Facilities are Open, Closed?

Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency city operations, will be closed Thursday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.

Trash, Recycling, and Yard Waste Delays

Solid waste services will pause for the day, delaying curbside garbage and recycling collection by one business day. Friday yard waste routes will be pushed to Monday, June 23.

The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and Household Hazardous Waste Center will also close on June 19.

Residents can stay updated on collection schedules and service alerts by downloading the Durham Rollout app or visiting the Solid Waste Management Department’s website.

Parks, Pools, and Rec Facilities

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) facilities and the department’s administrative office will be closed. However, parks, outdoor pools, athletic fields, picnic shelters, and any facilities with existing reservations will remain open for public use.

For more information about available activities and events, residents can call 919-560-4355 or visit the DPR website.

Free Downtown Parking

Parking will be free in most downtown areas on the city holiday. This includes on-street spaces, City-owned garages, and surface lots. The Park Durham Customer Service Center will be closed.

Drivers planning to park at Durham Centre Garage during a downtown event should still check the Special Event Parking Calendar, as a flat $7 fee applies beginning 90 minutes before scheduled events.

Transit Running on Sunday Schedule

GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS buses will run on a Sunday schedule on June 19. Riders should check the Transit app, call 919-485-RIDE (7433), or follow GoDurham on social media for any detours or service updates.

Customer Service Closures

Durham One Call will be offline during the holiday, but residents can still submit service requests online, by app, by text (919-813-6315), or by leaving a voicemail at 919-560-1200. Staff will route those messages to the proper departments the following business day.

Water Emergencies

Water main breaks, sewer overflows, or related emergencies should be reported to the city’s Water Management Department after-hours line at 919-560-4344. On-call crews will be dispatched as needed.
