South Durham’s Heather Hindin Named Executive Director of Harper’s Home

Harper’s Home, a Durham-based nonprofit that will provide temporary housing for families of pediatric patients at Duke Children’s Hospital, has named Heather Hindin as its full-time executive director. Hindin will officially assume the role on May 27.

The move marks a major milestone for the young organization as it prepares to break ground later this year. Harper’s Home received its nonprofit status in 2024 and is now in the midst of a capital campaign to fund construction of a network of furnished cottages and duplexes less than two miles from Duke Children’s.

Hindin, a longtime South Durham resident and columnist for Southpoint Access, brings both professional experience and personal connection to the role. Her column, Raising Durham, explores parenting and life in Bull City.

Professionally, Hindin spent more than a decade at the Emily K Center, where she led programs serving Durham students and families. But the seed for Harper’s Home was planted in 2021, when Hindin’s daughter, Harper, was diagnosed with leukemia. Through her family’s experience, she saw firsthand the comfort that comes from having stable housing nearby – and the stress for families who don’t.

“This moment feels incredibly significant,” said Shaun Horrigan, board chair of Harper’s Home. “Heather’s commitment is both professional and deeply personal. Her steady leadership and lived experience make her the right person to guide Harper’s Home forward.”

The organization is now actively raising funds and seeking community partnerships. For more information or to get involved, visit harpershomenc.org.
