The Piedmont Wildlife Center this week commemorates World Turtle Day on Thursday with an all-outdoor, family-friendly free event that includes a field survey challenge, tortoise and hare race, and turtle-themed crafts and games.
“Piedmont Wildlife Center is excited to celebrate North Carolina’s state reptile, the Eastern Box Turtle, with our special World Turtle Day event,” said Noelle Rizzieri, the center’s director of wildlife education. “Come out and enjoy the turtle-themed activities, and for the first year ever, a Tortoise and the Hare Race! It would be turtle-y awesome if we saw you there!”
The event runs 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Leigh Farm Park (364 Leigh Farm Rd.) in Durham. Although admission is free, visitors can support the center’s Turtle Ambassadors and North Carolina State University’s Turtle Rescue Team with a suggested $10 donation or donation of an item from the center’s wish list, including:
- Frozen shrimp/fish.
- Aquatic and box turtle pellets.
- Canned dog food.
- Newspaper.
- Empty plastic containers with lids, such as yogurt containers.
- Neosporin.
- Dry-erase markers.
- Sharpies and highlighters.
- Small food storage containers.
- Bra hooks.
- Baking soda.
- Grocery store gift cards.
- Paper towels.
