Fusion Academy, a private school offering one-to-one instruction for middle and high school students, plans to open a new location in Chapel Hill this summer.
Located on the first floor of The Gwendolyn near Glen Lennox, the new campus marks the third Fusion site in North Carolina, joining existing schools in Raleigh and Charlotte. Fusion’s model focuses on customized education for students who benefit from individualized instruction, including those with ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, or other learning and social-emotional differences.
“Fusion’s 1-to-1 classes allow teachers to customize lessons to each student’s learning style, pace, and interests,” said Jenna Cheney, who will serve as head of school at the Chapel Hill location. “For students with ADHD, this might include movement breaks; for dyslexia, multisensory reading strategies; for anxiety, a low-pressure, supportive environment. Every Fusion student gets the personalized attention they need to thrive.”
The school plans to open enrollment this summer with a variety of flexible options, including full-time, part-time, hybrid, and single-course programs for credit. Students may start at any point during the year.
“Students can enroll full-time, take classes for credit, or blend Fusion with other schooling,” Cheney said. “The flexibility we provide allows student-athletes, artists, those on a health-first schedule, and those with unique learning needs to design an education that fits their lifestyle. With rolling enrollment, students can start at any time. This makes Fusion an ideal solution for families struggling with traditional school or needing more academic support.”
While all academic instruction is conducted one-on-one, Cheney said students still have opportunities to socialize through activities like group projects, campus clubs, field trips, and events such as prom and graduation. A common area known as the Homework Café serves as a social hub during the day.
Teachers at Fusion receive training in social-emotional learning and relationship-based education. According to Cheney, instructors are encouraged to build rapport with students and support both academic growth and emotional well-being.
“Our philosophy is ‘Love, Motivate, Teach’ in that order – because we believe that if a student was disengaged in a traditional school setting, they must be re-engaged in their educational journey,” Cheney said.
Fusion Academy is fully accredited, and its mastery-based learning model is designed to emphasize subject comprehension over letter grades. Students receive transcripts recognized by colleges and universities, and the school provides college counseling and post-secondary planning support.
