[SoDu Sunrise Showcase] Keep an Eye on Raleigh

Over the weekend, I spent a little time diving into some of the N.C. Senate bills up for consideration in the first Southpoint Access Legislative Watch.

Among the items of interest you might want to check out:

  • Republicans want to keep the (currently) Democratic attorney general from joining litigation against Donald Trump’s executive orders. Anyone want to give me odds on whether they’d do the same to a Republican attorney general challenging a Democratic president?
  • The GOP also wants private- and home-schooled students without interscholastic athletic programs or extracurricular activities to get access to programs at public high schools. Home-school students I get. And, at least, the bill expects families from outside the public high school to pay a fee for their kids to participate. But you’d think private schools taking advantage of the Republican school voucher plan (which diverts money from public schools) could develop their own athletic programs now.
  • And then there’s the Freedom to Carry NC bill, which would let people carry a concealed handgun without a permit. Is it really too much to ask that someone get a permit to wander around North Carolina packing heat?
