The Chicken Hut restaurant on Fayetteville Street, recently awarded historic status, has something new to celebrate.

American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation announced Monday that Chicken Hut was among the recipients of $50,000 grants from the Backing Historic Small Restaurants program, now in its fifth year.

“These restaurants demonstrate the power that places hold,” said Carol Quillen, president and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. “For generations, neighbors have gathered here, shared stories, made new connections, and enjoyed regional cuisine that often reflects our nation’s global roots.”

Chicken Hut is owned by Peggy Tapp and Claiborne Tapp III.

Other North Carolina recipients include Corner Kitchen in Asheville and Zadie’s Market in Marshall.
