Durham: What City Services are Open, Closed on July 4?

As South Durham residents gear up to celebrate Independence Day, here’s what to expect from the City of Durham in terms of closures, changes, and local festivities for Friday, July 4, 2025.

🚫 City Closures

Most City of Durham offices, including City Hall, will be closed on Friday, July 4. Non-emergency facilities and operations will not be available for the holiday.


🗑️ Solid Waste Collection

  • No yard waste collection on July 4 – Friday’s yard waste route will instead be picked up on Monday, July 7.
  • Garbage and recycling will run on a normal schedule.
  • The Waste Disposal & Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and Household Hazardous Waste Center will be closed.

🏞️ Parks and Recreation

  • Recreation centers and DPR administrative offices will be closed on July 4.
  • Outdoor pools, spray grounds, and city lakes will stay open under normal hours.
  • Athletic fields, courts, and picnic shelters will still be available for rent.

🎇 Fireworks Celebration with the Durham Bulls:

  • Catch the show at Durham Bulls Athletic Park – fireworks begin around 9:15 p.m.
  • General admission opens after the 7th inning, based on availability.
  • Tickets are recommended to guarantee entry.

📍 Good views outside the stadium:

  • Grassy area behind Diamond View 3
  • Burt’s Bees plaza
  • Tobacco Road Sports Café
  • Ponysaurus Brewing

☔ In case of severe weather, fireworks may be rescheduled. Call 919-956-BULL for updates.


🚗 Parking

  • Free parking downtown in on-street spaces, select City garages, and surface lots.
  • Check the Special Event Parking Calendar to see if a $7 event rate is in effect at Durham Centre Garage.

🚌 Transit

  • GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • For route updates, use the Transit App, call 919-485-RIDE, or follow GoDurham on social media.

📞 Durham One Call & Utilities

  • Durham One Call will be closed but will still accept:
  • Water/sewer emergencies: call 919-560-4344 for after-hours service.
