During the first week of school, Rogers-Herr Middle School Principal Dr. Tawauna Stewart finds herself having to explain what seems, on the surface, to be a pretty simple premise.
Students classified as “walkers” walk home from school. Riders – like my son – either take a big yellow bus or get picked up at carpool.
Walkers are not, as some parents seem to think, students who walk from the middle school campus to Yates Baptist Church next door where their ride is waiting.
“We’ve recently received a high volume of emails requesting to designate students as walkers,” Walker said in a message to parents on Wednesday. “We want to take a moment to clarify what this designation means. A walker is a student who leaves the school building and walks home. Some families have been picking students up from the nearby church parking lot; however, this is not considered walking. Additionally, using the church lot for pickup has started to block access and create parking concerns for their congregation and staff.”
So don’t use the parking lot at the church for student pickup. If the child isn’t walking home, join the rest of us checking emails and listening to the radio in the carpool line that wraps around Rogers-Herr Middle School around 3 p.m.
