After Hurricane Helene devastated parts of Western North Carolina, many children lost access to their home, school, and public libraries – just when books were needed most for comfort and learning. Durham-based Book Harvest responded by donating 15,331 children’s books to schools and community groups across 17 counties.
The literacy nonprofit partnered with 19 local organizations to distribute the books, which were delivered on two trips, Dec. 9, 2024, and March 7, 2025. Most of the books were brand new and reached children through schools, community events, and mobile literacy units, including a preschool on wheels and a magic book bus.
