One Valve Leads to Widespread Durham Water Pressure Drop

Durham’s vast water system, controlled by about 31,000 valves, experienced unexpected disruptions after a routine maintenance exercise on Jan. 27. City workers were testing valve functionality when one was accidentally left closed, causing a surge in water pressure that led to multiple water main breaks overnight and into Jan. 28.
